In San Salvador, the two main street gangs are known as ‘Mara Salvatruchas’ (MS-13) and ‘Barrio18’ (M18). Both gangs were created in the 1980’s in Los Angeles by poor, mostly illegal immigrants, who had escaped from the civil war in El Salvador.
