James and Karla Murray present New York Nights

Having captured and preserved the beauty and charm of New York City’s traditional shops and lamented their dwindling numbers in Store Front – The Disappearing Face of New York, James and Karla Murray have returned to the city’s streets once more to expose the city bathed in light. New York Nights is the result, a book that thrills us because the city is switched on. The photographs continue in their powerful style – with structures rendered magnificently by a photographer duo possessing absolute mastery of a self-created genre.

Hi James and Karla! Please tell us what prompted you to embark on this project?

We began this project in 2008 after completing our book, Store Front-The Disappearing Face of New York, which documented the city’s neighborhood mom-and-pop storefronts during the daylight hours. There were many stores and places that we chose not to photograph because they were either not open from 9-5 pm or were more aesthetically pleasing when photographed at night.

What characteristics where you looking for in a location when choosing the subjects for New York Nights?

The locations we chose had to have a certain look and feel at night that we felt represented the experience of walking the city in the evening and early morning hours.

How would you best describe your ‘self-created genre’ as photographers?

We always try to shoot our subjects with little or no distractions taking away from the photograph, such as parked cars, people walking into the frame etc. We also strive to photograph things in a way that seems deceptively simple, although it may not be.

Are you working on any upcoming projects or have plans for future projects that you would like to share with us?

We are always working on multiple projects at the same time and seeing new ways in which the city inspires us.
